KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian-Chinese from Labuan singing in
Bahasa Malaysia . Surely you cannot get more Malaysian than
that.
Up-and-coming singer Karen Kong is hoping that Malaysians will be able to appreciate that fact with her debut Malay album Mulakan, which was officially launched at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre in Sentul on Thursday.
“I have loved singing Malay songs since I was a little girl.It has been my dream to have a Malay album all this while,” the 22-year-old said, adding that there was currently no plan for albums in Chinese or English just yet.Even Deputy Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Datuk Wong Kam Hoong, who was at the album launch, said:“Thisis a good contribution towards building a progressive and united Bangsa Malaysia and proves that the music industry does not distinguish among races,” he said.Born in Labuan and currently studying in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Karen was first spotted by Prodigee Media director Fred Chong after winning the university’s talent night with a rendition of Siti Nurhaliza’s Bukan Cinta Biasa.
Mulakan brings together some of Malaysia’s most talented musicians, such as producer Lee Chee Ching and songwriter Asmin Mudin, who wrote Malaysian Idol Jaclyn Victor’s Gemilang.
